Little is normally mentioned about The Stone except that Oliver Cromwell stayed there whilst his troops camped in the meadow opposite. There is in fact much more of interest including a connection to the poet Edmund Waller and the possibility that it was the site of the original manor of Chalfont St Giles.
There are two aspects that if anyone has information about I would appreciate hearing from you. The house was rebuilt in the 18th century and moved up the hill. There is reputed to be a picture extant in the village of the old house but who has it?
I know it became a maternity home at some time but its modern history (post 1900) is difficult to find.
Further information, anecdotes or photographs are sought.
If there is anybody who is interested in the very early parish boundary I would like to make contact to discuss my conjecture that much of the boundary was set by grants of land to Missenden Abbey.
The history up to 1904 is on a separate page but the subsequent history is still being researched. If anyone has information, perhaps from their deeds, that can throw light on the period after 1904 I would very much like to hear from them.
More has been published on the Vache than any other topic in the village except for Miltons Cottage. However as I have been asked questions and have also rediscovered an old estate map, I intend to put up a summary and some links. If however anyone has any early photos I can use or has a burning question about the estate please contact me.
